SEA OF GREEN
By Duncan Cameron, SOW Consulting LLCMarch 17, 2023

If it smells like weed outside of the Hynes Convention Center that means it's gotta be NECANN Boston again. Most trade shows are shades of grey but this event did have a slightly different flavor. The event floor was occupied by more dispensaries showcasing their brands than I ever remember; most of the bigger state operators sprinkled with a few MSO's. I fully expected to see the same cast of characters and brands trying to sell their latest new fangled gadget... and of course there was plenty of that. There was also a lot of real talk. Talk about real world issues when it comes to growing vertically (thanks
and
) and great tips on how to maximize and improve your genetics (
). But most endearing was the Legacy to Legal conversation moderated by
. Sometimes amidst all the talk of MSO ups & downs, challenges with testing, municipalities and regulations, we forget where this all started. To quote Murray-Powell, let's not forget to thank the legacy market for creating
the
market and the low cost of customer acquisition. Let's not forget stories like the one
told about realizing at 15 that his mom was smoking weed and then learning it was because she had cancer. The vibe in that room was different and it reminded my jaded ass of the true spirit of our community.
So thank you NECANN Boston and everyone I met there. Hopefully we can work together soon.
OTHER NEWS"People know Heinz Ketchup, but do they know the farm where the tomatoes come from? Vertical farms will have to work with and convince distributors." Albert Lin, CEO of VegBedThis statement encapsulates what I see as a problem for all indoor farms, cannabis or not. Not only in regards to distributors but customers as well. Most people don't care where they get their products from. When they do get to the closest store/dispensary, very rarely are they shopping based on the farm. It's much harder to brand raw materials as opposed to finished products. Hear more of Albert's thoughts on indoor farming here
