So what exactly is crop steering? I always get leery when folks start throwing around new (as in the last several years) jargon as it is often just repackaged material looking for fresh eyes. If you have ever grown plants intently you have probably engaged in some form of crop steering.

When you dig a little deeper though there is a more nuanced set of principles involved in crop steering. Understanding how irrigation events and environmental cues guide a plant to either vegetative or generative growth is key in steering your plants to perform how you would like them too.

Here are the most widely accepted basic tenets for crop steering in cannabis.

For vegetative growth -

  • Increase the frequency of irrigation

  • Maintain a warmer environment

  • Decrease the difference between day and night temps

  • Maintain a lower VPD

For generative growth -

  • Increase the dryback times between irrigation events and overnight

  • Decrease frequency of irrigation

  • Maintain a cooler environment

  • Higher VPD

  • HIgher EC
